Welcome to Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, is one of Tanzania’s largest and most pristine protected areas. Located in the southern part of the country, this expansive park covers over 30,000 square kilometres and is a true wilderness sanctuary. Known for its remarkable biodiversity, Nyerere offers a unique blend of savannah, woodland, and wetland ecosystems, making it an exceptional destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

The park is home to a vast array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, wild dogs, and hippos. Its rivers, particularly the Rufiji River, provide excellent opportunities for boat safaris, allowing visitors to get up close to crocodiles and a variety of bird species. The park also boasts one of the highest concentrations of African wild dogs, making it a top destination for those seeking to witness these rare predators in action.

With its diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife, Nyerere National Park offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path safari experience. The park’s remoteness ensures a peaceful and undisturbed encounter with nature, perfect for those seeking adventure and tranquillity.

Best Time To Visit

The Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park is during the dry season, from June to October. This period brings clear skies, mild temperatures, and better wildlife sightings, as animals cross around waterholes. The wet season (November to May) sees lush greenery and an influx of migratory birds, making it a great time for birdwatching. However, the wet season may cause some areas to be less accessible due to rains, and it can be more difficult to spot wildlife.

  • June – October: The dry season is ideal for game viewing as animals gather near the Rufiji River—perfect for unforgettable boat and walking safaris.
  • November – December: Short rains rejuvenate the landscape and attract migratory birds, creating vibrant photo opportunities.
  • January – March: Lush greenery, fewer tourists, and calving season offer peaceful safaris and rich wildlife activity.
  • April – May: The long rains make some areas inaccessible, but birdlife flourishes and the park feels truly wild.

Wild Life

  • Elephants: Massive herds roam freely through the park, especially near the Rufiji River during the dry season.
  • Hippos & Crocodiles: A boat safari offers thrilling, up-close views of these river giants in their natural habitat.
  • Lions & Leopards: Predators are commonly spotted stalking prey across the savannah and woodlands.
  • African Wild Dogs: Nyerere is one of the last strongholds for these rare and fascinating predators—watch them hunt in coordinated packs.
  • Birdlife: Over 440 species fill the skies—ideal for bird lovers seeking colourful, exotic sightings.
